- Functions of a Metering Device The primary function of a metering device is to provide refrigerant to the evaporator in a condition essential for effi cient heat absorption. To accomplish this, the device must change a full column of liquid refrigerant in the liquid line into tiny droplets of refrigerant that are easily evaporated, or vaporized, in the evaporator. The liquid is pushed through an orifi ce, or opening. It is very similar to what happens when water passes through a water nozzle
