  • Haymarket square riot - in 1886 a union led by august spies picketed and asked for 8 hour work days. Some of the non striking workers attacked the striking workers and in an attempt to stop it police fired into the crowd killing 4 of the striking workers . The next day they had a memorial for them and a protest against the killings. During the protest a bomb went off killing 6 police officers. 8 of the unionists were found guilty and were sentenced to death. In 1893 the governor of Illinois pardoned them and some dude made a political cartoon about how releasing them would cause anarchy.
